Why the Communion Video?

I shared my Communion video about a week ago and wanted to explain my motivation, reasoning, and thoughts behind it.

SONG INSPIRATION

Communion is not exciting

I realized, maybe a year and a half ago, that I just wasn’t giving Jesus the respect, honor, and attention he deserves in Communion.  While this has been apparent to me before, this time I realized that if I’m not excited then this shows how much I believe.  I had been hearing that if you aren’t amazed by God’s love and if it doesn’t excite you then you simply do not understand.  So I decided to do something about this.

Bible Study and Writing Music

Something I’ve learned in the last couple of years is that if I study something in the Bible that correlates to a song I’m arranging or writing, I am much more excited about the music and put a lot more effort into it.  The other very exciting part is that studying the Bible becomes much more exciting because it becomes so relevant to my music and God seems to reveal powerful truths that overwhelm me through this.  So the thought came to me to make a study of Communion and also write a piece with it to hopefully give me a new understanding and excitement when I take part in Communion.  As a result I do have a new respect for this time of remembrance.  I don’t take it lightly and I am becoming more and more amazed and overwhelmed by God.

VIDEO INSPIRATION

Too much Marketing

I am a musician and as a musician I try to show in my writings, videos, and performances that I am an artist.  The side I don’t share (for obvious reasons) is that this is also a business in a sense and I have to think about marketing and financing so I can keep doing this.  It’s certainly tough to balance these two sides.  About a year ago I was weighing too heavily on the business side of things and wanted to do something completely artistic and with the motivation of pleasing God alone.  It seemed quite natural to do a video project for the Communion piece.  All the ideas for it came together fairly easily.  Making it actually happen was the hard part.

Invest in God

Over the years I have learned about investing in my business.  But how often do I invest in honoring God?  I would say almost never or just in ways where I’m not giving up that much.  So I decided it was time to invest my time, efforts, and money into honoring God and I came up with this video project.  My goal was to make it all about God and not about business.  I wanted to make it a free video for churches to use.  No strings attached.  It’s just there for anyone.

So there’s the main motivation behind this.  If you have any questions about my faith, this video, the music, or what I like to eat for lunch please post them in the comment section below

Thank you. They say you never know the person you'll be reaching. Well, you reached out to one believer tonight who is going through more than I could bear. At first I stopped the video and then changed my mind and read all the verses and those last four words did me in. "He came to help." Thanks for reminding me that God is reaching for me even when it feels like he isn't.

Hello David, A friend emailed me the link to your video. Very well done. I am also very impressed with your playing. God has blessed you with wonderful fingers and a great ear. How fitting that you share your gifts in His service. Among other things, I too am a church guitarist. Perhaps some of your students would enjoy working on some of the hymn arrangements I post freely at http://www.scoreexchange.com/profiles/liturgicalguitarist Peace, Jim Nailon

David, you know I love and admire your work. To hear how your heart and soul went into this piece is very touching and inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing your motivation behind it. Also, with your permission, I would like to somehow work the video into services on 2/17 (10:50) and 3/17 (8:30) when we next have communion.
